Iodine/Food Triggers and Non-Dairy Brands

Excess, long-term use of supplements or herbs high in iodine or foods high in iodine can trigger acne flare-ups for those that are acne-prone.  Once iodine has entered the body and the bloodstream, excess amounts are excreted through the oil glands.  As it is excreted, it irritates pores and causes acne breakouts.  

 

Iodine is added to Multivitamins, protein drinks/powder, and of course it's in a lot of our foods. 

 

Here is a breakdown of Iodides that you need to reduce and eliminate:

 

Replace iodized salt with sea salt.  Eliminate Garlic Salt.

Choose Non-Organic Meat. (Free Range lean meat products are the best)

 

Eliminate the following:

 

cow's milk, (including organic and especially nonfat)

soy milk

yogurt

ice cream

cream cheese

half and half

 

Acceptable alternatives are:

 

Almond milk

Coconut milk

Rice milk

Hemp milk

Oat milk

Coconut cream

Non-dairy creamer

Goat cheese

Sheep cheese

Non-dairy cheese

Nut cheeses

 

Reduce your cheese intake to 2-3 times. 

 

Eliminate the following:

 

Why or Soy Protein

Protein Bars

Peanut Protein

 

Acceptable alternatives are:

 

Pea Protein

Egg White Powder

Hemp

 

Vega Sport Performance Protein and Perfect Fit a few safe alternatives however, continue to check for iodides and biotin before buying.

 

Eliminate the following:

 

Tofu

Soy

Soy Milk

Tempe

Edamame

Vegan Meat

 

Boca Burgers is a safe alternative

 

Minimize the following seafood:

 

Cod

Scallops

Salmon

Sardines

Canned Tuna

Shellfish

Fish sticks

Sushi

 

Acceptable alternatives are:

 

Freshwater fish

Lake Trout

Bass

Catfish

 

Eliminate the following:

 

Spirulina

Chlorella

Blue-Green Algae

Green Healthy Food Drink Powders

Kelp

Dulse

Miso Soup

Seaweed

Krill Oil

Crustaceans

Seaweed Supplements

Maca Powder

Estro Block

Vitamin with iodides

 

Minimize your egg yolk as these are high in B7 (Biotin).  Egg whites are an acceptable alternative

 

Eliminate the following as they are high in Androgens:

 

Peanuts

Peanut Butter

Peanut Oil

Corn Oil

Canola Oil

 

Acceptable alternatives:

 

Almond Butter

Other nut butters without Canola Oil

Olive Oil

Coconut Oil

Sunflower Oil

Cashew Oil

Safflower Oil

Butter

 

Palm Oil is okay for most, but not for all with acne prone skin

 

Other items to minimize:

 

Sugar

Cookies

Cakes

Soda

Fruit Juice

Ice Cream

Candy

White Bread

Pasta

 

Non-Dairy Brands:

  • Halo Top - great ice cream

 

  • So Delicious - ice cream, creamers, yogurt, cheddar cheese

 

  • Silk – creamers, whipping cream

 

  • Oatly- ice cream, oat milk, yogurt

 

  • Kite Hill -sour cream, cream cheese, ranch dip

 

  • Califia Farms -half & half
