Procedure:
- Perform skin history consultation, sign a Microdermabrasion/Dermaplaning Consent form during which time questions are answered, as well as discussing potential risks, complications, and anticipated results. These completed forms will be present in the chart.
- Any drug allergies will be noted on the front cover of the chart.
- Photographs may be taken if necessary.
- Client is placed in treatment chair, supine and in a reclined position.
- Clinician to perform service in latex or non-latex gloves
- Clinician should not leave the room for any reason in the middle of the procedure or leave the client sitting without being massaged or treated in some way.
- The client is properly draped, using linens that are laundered after each use.
- The skin will be cleansed, with appropriate cleanser and soft gauze, removing all make-up except eye make-up.
- Remove cleanser with damp soft gauze.
- Analyze the skin.
- Prep skin with Glycolic Toner or 70% Alcohol.
- Ensure skin is dry by either allowing it to air dry or using a fan.
- Prepare the implement by placing the 10 blade butter knife onto the scalpel handle with the aide of the hemostat. Slip into place, listen and feel for a “click” to insure the blade is securely fastened.
- Begin treatment by starting on one side of the face, spreading the skin taught between the pointer finger and thumb (approximately 1 inch), allowing the blade to glide between the two fingers. The blade must be held at a 45° angle to skin for the most effective result. Do not lift the blade off the skin unless moving to the next area.
- Continue this process over the entire face excluding the nose.
- Skin will be stimulated and appear pink.
- Wipe off skin of any residue including dead skin cells and hair.
- Cover client’s eyes.
- Turn on magnifying light.
- Perform extractions using any or all of the following: fingers wrapped in Kim Wipes, comedone extractor or lancet.
- Wipe down skin with Glycolic Toner to kill bacteria.

- Hand client fan.
- Apply appropriate AHA peel solution on a 4 x 4 gauze. Hold the skin taunt, and apply gentle, even glide strokes to the skin’s surface ensuring overlap and consistency. Have the client keep their eyes closed during the procedure. Applying chemical will increase the redness and flakiness the client experiences. Discuss this prior to procedure and when signing the informed consents.
- After each layer, check to see how “tingley” the skin is between 1 and 10. You should be able to do 1-2 layers. But stop once they get to an 8.
- Should the skin blanch in any areas, neutralize immediately.
- Neutralize the peel with the Neutralizing Solution on soft gauze till the client’s skin calms down to a 1-2.
- The client may experience slight warmth for up to an hour after the treatment is administered.
- Apply appropriate moisturizer and SPF.
- Unwrap hair.
Post Treatment:
1. Post treatment instructions are to be given and reviewed with the client after the treatment has been administered.
2. If the client experiences hypersensitivity or is very irritated, apply cold compresses for 1-2 days post treatment.
3. Client is not to apply any irritants, such as retinols, glycolics, etc. for 3-5 days after a dermaplaning treatment.
4. Clients may expect minimal flaking after the treatment. Occasionally “sensitive spots” may occur and can be treated with a topical Hydrocortisone 1%, Aquafor, or Anti-biotic Ointment to alleviate the discomfort.
5. If the client experiences a superficial nick, apply Anti-biotic ointment to skin immediately following the treatment and advise client to continue with the Anti-biotic ointment until resolved.
