Clinical Aesthetic Services

Title:               Dermaplaning Facial

Policy:            All clinical aesthetic staff rendering client care will adhere to this protocol

Purpose:          To safely and properly exfoliate the skin utilizing the Microdermabrasion machine and to safely and properly exfoliate, hydrate, massage, manually cleanse and nourish the skin.

Scope:             All licensed aestheticians rendering client care

Definition:      Clinical Protocol

Indications: Exfoliation, temporary reduction of vellus hair, and overall texture of the skin.  An excellent alternative to clients that are sensitive to chemical peels, waxing and other forms of hair depilation.

 

Contraindications

  • Clients that present with Rosacea or chronic use of oral or topical steroids on the face.
  • Those individuals that have active acne or acne prone skin.  Tan or sunburned skin cannot be treated.
  • DO NOT use on open lesions, rashes, burns, sun burned or tan skin, suspicious lesions, or active acne, active herpes simplex virus (HSV).

 

Setting-up the Treatment Room:

  1. Make 4 hot towels 1 hour prior to appointment.
  2. Blinds are closed so as to create a dark room.
  3. Pull down top blanket and flat sheet at an angle so that client can go under the covers.
  4. Place white towel in a triangle shape over an unfolded white towel to go under the head and to wrap the hair.
  5. Dim light to low.
  6. Turn lamp to lowest output.
  7. Fold gown nicely at the end of the bed.

 

Procedure:       

  1. Perform skin history consultation, sign a Microdermabrasion/Dermaplaning Consent form during which time questions are answered, as well as discussing potential risks, complications, and anticipated results.  These completed forms will be present in the chart.
  2. Any drug allergies will be noted on the front cover of the chart.
  3. Have client change into a gown and “get cozy” under the covers.
  4. Photographs may be taken if necessary.
  5. Client is placed in treatment chair, supine and in a reclined position.
  6. Clinician to perform service in latex or non-latex gloves
  7. Clinician should not leave the room for any reason in the middle of the procedure or leave the client sitting without being massaged or treated in some way.
  8. The client is properly draped, using linens that are laundered after each use.
  9. The skin will be cleansed, with appropriate cleanser and soft gauze, removing all make-up except eye make-up.
  10. Remove cleanser with HOT TOWEL.
  11. Analyze the skin.
  12. Prep skin with Glycolic Toner or 70% Alcohol.
  13. Ensure skin is dry by either allowing it to air dry or using a fan.
  14. Prepare the implement by placing the 10 blade butter knife onto the scalpel handle with the aide of the hemostat.  Slip into place, listen and feel for a “click” to insure the blade is securely fastened.
  15. Begin treatment by starting on one side of the face, spreading the skin taught between the pointer finger and thumb (approximately  1 inch),  allowing the blade to glide between the two fingers.  The blade must be held  at a 45° angle to skin for the most effective result. Do not lift the blade off the skin unless moving to the next area.
  16. Continue this process over the entire face excluding the nose.
  17. Skin will be stimulated and appear pink.
  18. Wipe off skin of any residue including dead skin cells and hair.
  19. Cover client’s eyes.
  20. Turn on magnifying light.
  21. Perform extractions using any or all of the following: fingers wrapped in Kim Wipes, comedone extractor or lancet.
  22. Wipe down skin with Glycolic Toner to kill bacteria.
  23. Clean goggles with 70% alcohol.
  24. Apply Hylunia Hydration, Antioxidant and/or Aloe Mask with a fan brush.
  25. Drape face with HOT TOWEL. And drape the hot towel with a dry towel over top. Clip together with large bobby pin.
  26. Allow client to rest under heat towel for up to 10 minutes.
  27. While client is under heat towel and mask treatment, massage decolette, shoulders, arms and upper back with massage lotion and lavender essential oil for 10 minutes.
  28. Remove mask from face with a fresh HOT TOWEL.
  29. Facial massage- start with acupressure massage and move into traditional facial massage movement of efflourage.
  30. Apply appropriate moisturizer, SPF, eye cream and chapstick.
  31. Unwrap hair.
  32. Massage scalp to end the treatment.

 

 

Post Treatment:

1.         Post treatment instructions are to be given and reviewed with the client after the treatment has been administered.

2.         If the client experiences hypersensitivity or is very irritated, apply cold compresses for 1-2 days post treatment.

3.         Client is not to apply any irritants, such as retinols, glycolics, etc. for 3-5 days after a dermaplaning treatment.

4.         Clients may expect minimal flaking after the treatment.  Occasionally “sensitive spots” may occur and can be treated with a topical Hydrocortisone 1%, Aquafor, or Anti-biotic Ointment to alleviate the discomfort.

5.         If the client experiences a superficial nick, apply Anti-biotic ointment to skin immediately following the treatment and advise client to continue with the Anti-biotic ointment until resolved.

6.         Avoid chlorinated pools, hot tubs, or sauna.

 

Clean-up:

  1. Dispose of Scalpel Blade and Lancet into sharps red container. Thoroughly clean comedone extractor and place into Cavicide disinfectant tray for 10 minutes
  2. Empty and clean steel water bowl with cavicide solution spray for 10 minutes.
  3. Remove and replace bed linens.
  4. Place dirty laundry and gown in appropriate receptacle.

 

 

Complications:

 

In case of complications or emergency, clients are advised to contact Natural Skincare Clinic immediately. If clinicians cannot resolve the matter, the physician is to be contacted and available within 30 minutes.
