As a microcomedone grows more and more under the skin,  it gets closer to the surface and eventually can be seen with the naked eye. A microcomedone that eventually surfaces, and does not inflame, is a non-inflamed breakout.

There are two types of non-inflamed acne:

1. Open comedone- is a blackhead. This is a pore filled with excess oil and is “open” meaning that there is no layer over the top. Because it is open and exposed to oxygen the top layer turns black as it is oxidized.

2. Closed comedone- is a whitehead. This is a pore filled with excess oil and is “closed” meaning that there is a layer of skin over the surface. The oil and dead skin cells are trapped under the layer of skin and form a bump as the oil bumps up over time. A whitehead is able to be extracted and a white core should come out.
