What to say to a client when they are having a histamine reaction:
There is this weird thing with the skin barrier, where your skin will let allergies in and you become more sensitive to reactions. And because your skin is a big old organ, having it exposed to an allergen can increase an actual reaction. So if your skin is compromised or dry, the allergens can get in more effectively.
Your body seems to be stuck in a histamine reaction. If this was truly an allergic reaction, we would have known that right away and from patch testing. Which makes me think a histamine response is what is happening here. Once your body gets stuck on the histamine reaction, you have to convince it to stop and that the product is not a danger to your skin.
We recommend using Benadryl proactively, about 1-2 hours, before you are going to apply your Acne Gel. This will help to convince your body to not have a histamine reaction. So basically, you're going to retrain your body that the Acne Gel is not an invader.
It's abnormal that this happens, but my Team said, although rare it has happened in the past, and explained the above on how to work through this.
Talk about how to bring products in one at a time. If all is well until you apply the Acne Gel, then more than likely the client is having histamine reaction.
If clients experience severe itching they can also use Benadryl.
