Menstrual Cycle and Breakouts

Many women don’t consider their acne to be a hormonal issue because their breakouts don’t start when their cycle starts.  Typically women experience breakouts about 7-10 days prior to when their cycle begins.  And even though this is common and normal for women to experience, we still consider this a hormonal imbalance.

Because what happens is the progesterone levels are increasing during this time in order to prepare your body for your menstrual cycle. And when your progesterone levels are higher, your other hormones, your estrogen and androgen levels are low.  So there’s a shift in hormones that is happening about a week before your period.

If a client is skipping or hasn't had a period in several months, you would start them on Vitex, which will help to "reset" cycle and encourage a cycle to start again.
