Understanding Our Clients

In addition to clearing acne, when working with herbal formulas, one is healing and re balancing their body from the inside out. This is what leads to long-lasting acne clearing and better well-being.

Let us first understand our client and human nature. Most people have become comfortable with being uncomfortable (or sick). The onset of internal disease has happened so slowly that it has become their new “normal”. As we become more and more health conscious, people are realizing that headaches, joint pain, lethargy, acne, inflammation, etc. are not normal and they desire optimal health and to feel better. However, we are sometimes our own worst enemy to change. Most people want a magic bullet or think that the journey back to balance will not have any discomfort. This is our role as a Coach to remind them of how the body heals the process it must go through. And to then encourage and support them through the stages of healing.

I like to use the analogy of driving home from work when explaining the Stages of Healing. In order to get to where they came from (in the analogy work), they must reverse their car out of the garage, down the driveway and travel down the same street(s) that got them home the night before. This is how the body heals, in reverse. One cannot mistreat their bodies with sugar, GMOs, food chemicals, alcohol, medications, watching tv, etc and magically repair the body without discomfort. There are various terms used to describe this: side effects, detoxing, purging, cleansing, re balancing, etc. Whatever you call it, depending on the severity of imbalance, the road to optimal health may be unpleasant at times.

When the journey becomes unpleasant or uncomfortable, many people will want to quit. They will want to stop taking their herbs and supplements, stop their skincare, go back to eating comfort foods and, all around, feel discouraged. This is when a Coach, like yourself, comes in to support them through this bump in the road. We believe in a process called Motivational Interviewing.

Here are the 5 principles of this technique:

  • Express and show empathy- Specialists express and demonstrate empathy when discussing behaviors, thoughts and life events that clients regularly engage in. By expressing empathy, specialist can start to build rapport and trust

  • Support and develop discrepancy- clients give reasons for changing their behavior – instead of viewing specialist as authority figures with the right answers.

  • Deal with resistance- When clients resist changing their behavior, specialists do not confront the client’s resistance. Instead, specialists avoid struggling to get clients to see their point of view.

  • Support self-efficacy- Clients are made to feel that they are capable of achieving the change they want.

  • Develop autonomy- Specialists demonstrate to clients that the authentic power for them to change comes from within, not from the specialist.
