While the FDA categorizes all herbs, supplements, vitamins and homeopathies as “Dietary Supplements,” this is rather misleading. Herbs and vitamins are very different in terms of how they are made and how they work in the body.
Most vitamin and mineral “supplements” are manufactured synthetically with chemicals and do not come straight from their natural sources. They are made to mimic the way natural vitamins and nutrients act in our bodies. Many synthetic vitamins lack the transporters and co-factors associated with naturally occurring vitamins because they have been “isolated.” The Organic Consumers Association emphasizes that isolated vitamins cannot be used or recognized by the body in the same way as the natural version.
On the other hand, herbs come straight from nature. Herbs are derived directly from the plant containing the vitamin/nutrients and are not produced in a test tube. Each individual herb contains its own specific set nutrient values just like food. For example, Rose Hips are high in Vitamin C. Herbs are very powerful nutrient dense forms of medicine made by Mother Nature herself. Eating fruits, vegetables and meat is one way of getting vitamins but taking herbs is another way.
