Types of Acne

1. Inflamed- consists of papules, pustules, nodules and cysts. Inflamed acne is inflamed. It  is characterized by:

  • red

  • swollen

  • warm/hot to the touch

  • sometimes painful

  • bleeds easily with extractions

  •  usually the fastest to clear!

2. Non-inflamed- consists of blackheads (open comedones), closed comedones and whiteheads. It has a dull, bumpy appearance. One can feel non-inflamed acne by touching the skin more than they can see it.

  • Flesh colored (ie not red)

  • No inflammation

  • Often times confused for not being acne

  • Feels “bumpy”

  • Will take longer to clear than inflamed acne

  • Very resilient to products

  • Needs aggressive treatments and home care regimens
