Spironolactone

Spironolactone is a blood pressure medication used as an off label (a prescription drug prescribed for uses other than what the FDA has approved) for treating acne in adult females. As a cardiovascular medication, spironolactone is an aldosterone (a steroid hormone produced by the adrenal glands) antagonist and diuretic. Beyond those effects, the drug is also a competitive inhibitor of the androgen receptor and an inhibitor of 5-alpha reductase.

In regards to its treatment of acne, spironolactone offers dose-dependent reductions in sebum excretion and has a variable effect on serum androgen levels. The drug has treated cases of acne, hirsutism, and female pattern alopecia. The range of effective doses is 50 to 200 mg.

If a client is coming to Natural Acne Clinic and is on spironolactone, then it is not working. We know experientially that this medication is not needed to get someone clear. We recommend that they stop the spironolactone when starting the program if not taking the drug for medical reasons.

A natural alternative that will also help to lower androgen hormones is Saw Palmetto. First, evaluate if the client shows signs of elevated androgens and then choose the appropriate herbs and supplements for re-balancing the body from the inside out.
